Potty Training Solutions

The most common time to start potty training your child will be between the 18months and two years old. It is normally not a good idea to start the process earlier though there are some who need potty training three year old. Once the process is under way you will need patience and might even want to start a reward system or incorporate the use of a potty training sticker chart. Until then, don’t push the matter, the child will usually start to show signs that they are ready to begin potty training. The signals to look for are:

  • potty training Your child starts to show an interest in using the toilet.
  • When using the toilet will appear to be imitating other family members.
  • The child will be able to tell you if they need to use the potty (or if it is too late)
  • They will try to pull down and pull up their pants on their own
  • Will show irritation when pants or diapers are wet
  • Will be able to go for longer periods (about 2 hours) without wetting themselves.

Many parent think that once the child has successfully told them that they need the potty and has held on long enough to get there then that is all they need to do and that they can now take their child out of diapers. Well this is not quite true, it can be a long process and requires a lot of patience. Relax in the knowledge that it will eventually sort itself out and try not to get hassled when there are accidents. Try and encourage your child with rewards or by using a potty training sticker chart.

When I first tried to teach my daughter to potty train, I put her in "panties" and thought she would know what to do. Of course, I knew very little about the subject than I eventually learned some time to learn how to teach her to go potty. Then we would start over. It is important that no matter what, you keep potty training, and like anything else, keep things in perspective. You may make some or many errors but it will eventually work itself out.

It may be worth your while making a potty training plan, decide what sort of potty you will use, what you will use as rewards,… treats, high praise, stickers on a potty training sticker chart etc. There is a method offered by Dr Phil that involves a one day training plan but it can be quite intense and may be overwhelming for younger parents. This will be addressed in a future article. Read a little and decide which method you will use before your child is ready to begin so that you will have it all prepared by the time you start to notice the tell tale signs that they are ready to begin their potty training.

Potty training sticker chart could become one of your potty training solutions when potty training three year old children.
