Potty Training at Night
When you have successfully initiated daytime potty training with your child and things are beginning to look good then you may want to consider starting nighttime potty training. Don’t start this until the daytime training is successful and the child is using the potty on their own on most occasions without too much fuss. It is quite an intense process and its a good idea to give it a break at night time initially.
At the beginning you will want to let your child wear a diaper pull ups at night reassuring them that they are doing well staying dry all day long and that its ok to be wearing a diaper at night. If you child has difficulties staying dry at nights then you might want to try the following;
Take them to the potty just before bed time
- Limit their fluid intake in the hours before bed time
- When you go to bed yourself wake them up and take them to the bathroom, most will be very sleepy and some (my son for example) will not even wake up on their nighttime trip to the bathroom They will walk (with your help), wit on the toilet or potty and go to the bathroom virtually without properly waking up. – This not only greatly helps them not wet themselves at night but also gets them used to the idea of waking up dry so if they ever do have an accident during the night it will be more notable and distressing to them and they will not want to repeat it if possible.
On occasions, if your child becomes restless and appears to be having bad dreams it may simply be that they need to use the potty… wake them up and take them and they will soon be spending the whole night dry.
The night time potty training can take a lot longer than daytime training. There are sometimes children of 8, 9 and 10 years old that still have night time problems. The key is to not make the child feel bad about it, support them as best you can, get your child to help you change the sheets if they wet the bed, get them to help you take the sheets to the washing machine etc. Eventually the concept of a dry night will sink into the child’s subconscious and they will be able to control themselves when asleep
nighttime potty training can be quite a lengthy process so the potty training answers for potty training at night don't come easily... just give it time and patience
