The steps before Potty Training

When thinking about beginning potty training you might think that it will not be such a big deal. Well if you prepare for it in advance then it need not be. The preparation stage is as most books on potty training will state is just as important as the actual potty training itself.

It will be important no matter what to keep the whole idea of potty training in perspective and above all to keep your sense of humor (you’ll need it). There will be many accidents and maybe even some setbacks but in the end you will succeed but it will make things a lot more difficult if you loose your cool for both your child and for yourself in the long run. You should endeavor to make potty training a fun time, it should ideally involve the whole household.

The actual pre-potty training stage is very important. Once the child starts to show the tell tale signs of being ready to start then you can begin to plan your potty training.
Some of the signs include;
Ability to hold urine for extended periods (about 2 hours)
Being aware of when urination or bowel movement is about to occur.

Getting ready to begin potty training can be the key to whether it is successful or not.

Practice sessions of getting ready to use the potty should be the first step. When dressing or undressing your child then you should get them to pull up (or down) their own pants.
Think about what sort of motivation or positive encouragement you will use. Children react very well to encouragement and naturally have a need to please.

There are many training methods you might want to use from using charts with starts to sprints to the bathroom.  There is a method by Dr Phil which is quite intense and claims to be successful in just one day. It involves throwing a party and using a doll. You should choose the method which best suits you, your child and your family (they will absolutely need to get involved too).
